The battle has waged on for ages now. Is it beneficial to place a child into day care? While each side of the argument certainly has its proponents, one fact remains: Parents that continue to operate as part of the workforce must often utilize day care centers to care for their young ones. Luckily, studies HAVE been conducted which shed some light on the debate. In fact, the National Institute of Child Health and Development, or NICHD, once conducted an elaborate study to chart the lasting effects of day care centers.
The NICHD Study of Early Child Care followed 1,364 children from birth until first grade, and examined the effect that day care had on the psychological development of each kid. Study subjects were recruited from 10 separate locations across the US and were drawn from a number of different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
At its core, the NICHD study was concerned with a number of separate topics. For instance, is the family influence on a child's development diminished when that child is exposed to extensive child care? Also, is the age of entry into day care or the type of care actually related to children's psychological development or their physical health? Utilizing a complex and detailed study design, researchers were able to arrive at some pretty conclusive findings.
Day care is proven to help the development of children.
When all was said and done, results certainly favored the child care supporters. The study showed that the right care facility led to higher cognitive performance, a higher level of school readiness and better language comprehension and production. At any rate, day care centers certainly didn’t do much to hinder the growth of their young clients.
